Disability on TV

Like many other people around the world I get caught up in watching the latest shows on television. This past year, I noticed a trend with disability being portrayed in many supporting and main characters. I think this is a fantastic step in the right direction. Whether it is the Dwarf in Game of Thrones (Peter Dinklage), Walt Jr. in Breaking Bad who has Cerebral Palsy (RJ Mitte), the actress with Down Syndrome in the latest season of American Horror Story (Jamie Brewer) or one of the main characters in Sons of Anarchy having a son with Spina Bifida (Gybby Eusebio). Bringing issues into the mainstream gets people thinking and talking about them.

What are your thoughts; do you watch any of these shows? Do you like having disability portrayed in television shows? Do they do an accurate job of portraying the various disabilities or how could they do it better? Have I missed any shows or are there any other characters or actors with disabilities that you have enjoyed in the past?

Some of the most popular shows in 2013 have had characters or actors with disabilities and this is very exciting, I, for one, think this is just the beginning and can’t wait to see how they continue to address disability issues and awareness in years to come! Be sure to let us know your thoughts below!

Actor, RJ Mitte
